Carved Inlace Medallion – Intermediate Ability Level

Want to use inlays that have real dimension and accent in your gourd art?  This class teaches the techniques of preparing a gourd surface for the application of Inlace and carving into both gourd and Inlace materials.  We’ll begin by preparing a gourd with an area to be inlaid, mix a two part resin, and fill the carved out portion.  Since resin (Inlace) takes a day to “set up”, we’ll have to work on a medallion previously prepared by the instructor.  It will be ready for painting, staining, or a clear finish.  The gourd you prepare in class becomes a second project you can embellish and work on at home!

Instructor furnishes:  Two diamond dental burrs, Inlace, one gourd, and a prepared disc (by the instructor) which is ready for carving.

Student furnishes:  Each student will need to provide a power carving tool (e.g. Dremel), preferably with a flex shaft and stand.  Also, participants will need an inverted V cutter, a ball cutter, and the drum sander which comes with most sets.  A 1/16 inch collet is needed for the dental burrs.  A respirator mask is highly recommended if you already own one.  If not, bring a dust mask.
